The whole mitten-along on one page!

As promised- here is the mitten along on one page from start to finish: ENJOY!!

PART 1

Bev's Marvelous Mitts for 5-7 year olds:
Make a chain of 55 (5-7years)

Row 1:
* Single crochet into next 7 chains to form the cuff.
* slip stitch next 3 stitches for the wrist, now s
ingle crochet in next 15 stitches for hand, slip stitch next 4 stitches for top,
* single crochet in next 15 stitches for hand, slip stitch next 3 stitches for wrist, single crochet in next 7 stitches for cuff, chain 1 to turn all rows.

Row 2:
(you will be going into the 2nd chain from hook and into back loops ONLY -see photo to right)
,
* single
crochet into each single crochet and slip stitch in each slip stitch of previous row.
* Repeat Row 2 for desired width of hand (usually 5 ridges for kids, more for adults).

(If you need a place to send mittens please send them to the address on this page:
http://www.bevscountrycottage.com/cheerful-hearts-and-hands.html )
------------------

Part 2

Today we will start the thumb:

Work the same as we have been to make the cuff:

Single crochet in 7 stitches, slip stitch the 3 stitches for the wrist and single crochet just 5 stitches of hand.

Now, chain 12 (this will become the thumb) then fold the mitten in half lengthwise and join with a single crochet to opposite side of mitten (meaning- join in the 5th single crochet up from the wrist) See photo to left.

Now work back down toward the other cuff - 4 more single crochet, one in each of the next 4 stitches of the hand, slip stitch in next 3 stitches (wrist), and 7 single crochet in last 7 stitches for cuff. Chain 1 and turn.

---------------

Part 3:
Next Row: Single crochet in 7, slip stitch in next 3. sc in 5 to thumb chain, single crochet in next 5 chains (forms one side of thumb),
- slip stitch next 2 stitches, (this forms top of fingers)
- single crochet in remaining 5 stitches of chain (other side of thumb),
- finish in pattern down toward wrist again.

Repeat last row 3 times to form the thumb, working in the single crochets and slip stitches.
End off leaving enough yarn to sew completely around mitten.
(This is what is should look like when you are done with today's crocheting).

-----------------

Part 4
FINISHING: If you have not done so already, cut a 15" yarn tail.

Thread your yarn tail onto a yarn needle.

Fold your mitten in half lengthwise & sew around matching stitches on one side of the mitten with the other side. (See the photo)

As you sew the tip of the thumb or top of the mittens, run the needle and yarn under the few top stitches across to the other side, pull slightly. This will gather the top a tiny bit.

Continue sewing down the other side.

Now this is where you can take a bristle hair brush and gently brush the inside of the mitt to make it slightly fluffy.

Turn right side out. *See photo

Extra Cuff: Single crochet around the cuff for 2 or 3 rounds. Single crochet in every other 'ridge' around the 1st time to make the wrist tighter. (This will cut your number of stitches in half)

Make another mitten the same.
------------------

Here you go! The final thing you can do for those mittens, IF you want to. Works well so little ones don't keep losing their mittens!

Part 5
COAT STRING for young children's mittens
Join yarn to one cuff at seam stitches and then sc around entire cuff.

* make a ch about 2-2 1/2 feet long and join with sl st to other mitten at seam.

* Sc around that mitten too, and you now have a string to thread mittens through coat. Cut a 4" tail, thread onto a needles and weave tail through the inside of the mitten.

For extra warmth, use double yarn and brush the inside of the mitten with a hair brush to make it 'fuzzy' and soft.

Remember the guy who got on a plane with a bomb built into his shoe...

I have searched online to find out if this is one of those fwd fwd hoax type emails, but even left-wing SNOPES doesn't list it as such so...

---------------------------------------------
"Remember the guy who got on a plane with a bomb built into his shoe and tried to light it?

Did you know his trial is over?
Did you know he was sentenced?
Did you see/hear any of the judge's comments on TV or Radio?

Didn't think so!!!

Everyone should hear what the judge had to say.

Ruling by Judge William Young, US District Court.

Prior to sentencing, the Judge asked the defendant if he had anything to say. His response: After admitting his guilt to the court for the record, Reid also admitted his 'allegiance to Osama bin Laden, to Islam, and to the religion of Allah,' defiantly stating, 'I think I will not apologize for my actions,' and told the court 'I am at war with your country.'

Judge Young then delivered the statement quoted below:

January 30, 2003, United States vs. Reid.

Judge Young: 'Mr. Richard C. Reid, hearken now to the sentence the Court imposes upon you.

On counts 1, 5 and 6 the Court sentences you to life in prison in the custody of the United States Attorney General. On counts 2, 3, 4and 7, the Court sentences you to 20 years in prison on each count, the sentence on each count to run consecutively. (That's 80 years.)

On count 8 the Court sentences you to the mandatory 30 years again, to be served consecutively to the 80 years just imposed. The Court imposes upon you for each of the eight counts a fine of $250,000 that's an aggregate fine of $2 million. The Court accepts the government's recommendation with respect to restitution and orders restitution in the amount of $298.17 to Andre Bousquet and $5,784 to American Airlines.

The Court imposes upon you an $800 special assessment. The Court imposes upon you five years supervised release simply because the law requires it. But the life sentences are real life sentences so I need go no further.

This is the sentence that is provided for by our statutes. It is a fair and just sentence. It is a righteous sentence.

Now, let me explain this to you. We are not afraid of you or any of your terrorist co-conspirators, Mr. Reid. We are Americans. We have been through the fire before. There is too much war talk here and I say that to everyone with the utmost respect. Here in this court, we deal with individuals as individuals and care for individuals as individuals. As human beings, we reach out for justice.

You are not an enemy combatant. You are a terrorist. You are not a soldier in any war. You are a terrorist. To give you that reference, to call you a soldier, gives you far too much stature. Whether the officers of government do it or your attorney does it, or if you think you are a soldier, you are not----- you are a terrorist. And we do not negotiate with terrorists. We do not meet with terrorists. We do not sign documents with terrorists. We hunt them down one by one and bring them to justice.

So war talk is way out of line in this court. You are a big fellow. But you are not that big. You're no warrior. I've known warriors. You are a terrorist. A species of criminal that is guilty of multiple attempted murders. In a very real sense, State Trooper Santiago had it right when you first were taken off that plane and into custody and you wondered where the press and the TV crews were, and he said: 'You're no big deal.'

You are no big deal.

What your able counsel and what the equally able United States attorneys have grappled with and what I have as honestly as I know how tried to grapple with, is why you did something so horrific. What was it that led you here to this courtroom today?

I have listened respectfully to what you have to say. And I ask you to search your heart and ask yourself what sort of unfathomable hate led you to do what you are guilty and admit you are guilty of doing? And, I have an answer for you. It may not satisfy you, but as I search this entire record, it comes as close to understanding as I know.

It seems to me you hate the one thing that to us is most precious. You hate our freedom. Our individual freedom. Our individual freedom to live as we choose, to come and go as we choose, to believe or not believe as we individually choose. Here, in this society, the very wind carries freedom. It carries it everywhere from sea to shining sea. It is because we prize individual freedom so much that you are here in this beautiful courtroom, so that everyone can see, truly see, that justice is administered fairly, individually, and discretely. It is for freedom's sake that your lawyers are striving so vigorously on your behalf, have filed appeals, will go on in their representation of you before other judges.

We Americans are all about freedom. Because we all know that the way we treat you, Mr. Reid, is the measure of our own liberties. Make no mistake though. It is yet true that we will bear any burden; pay any price, to preserve our freedoms. Look around this courtroom. Mark it well. The world is not going to long remember what you or I say here. The day after tomorrow, it will be forgotten, but this, however, will long endure.

Here in this courtroom and courtrooms all across America , the American people will gather to see that justice, individual justice, justice, not war, individual justice is in fact being done. The very President of the United States through his officers will have to come into courtrooms and lay out evidence on which specific matters can be judged and juries of citizens will gather to sit and judge that evidence democratically, to mold and shape and refine our sense of justice.

See that flag, Mr. Reid? That's the flag of the United States of America . That flag will fly there long after this is all forgotten. That flag stands for freedom. And it always will.

Mr. Custody Officer. Stand him down."

So, how much of this Judge's comments did we hear on our TV sets? We need more judges like Judge Young
. Pass this around. Everyone should and needs to hear what this fine judge had to say. Powerful words that strike home.
--------------------------------------------

Now go, use your freedoms and make this a good day for all you meet!! Hug the ones you love, and tell them you love them. Cherish life!

Helping HAITI!

Following the devastating 7.0 magnitude earthquake in Haiti the other day, many knitters and crocheters are wondering what to do.

The first thing, is donate money, through your church, through the Red Cross... get those dollars there to help with immediate first response needs.

I have created a page on my website with some information for those of us with more yarn than money. We can be part of the second response teams...

http://www.bevscountrycottage.com/helping-haiti.html

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
You can use any pattern you want to make 6"x6" or 7"x7" washcloths. See my page for mailing address.
Bev's Baby Clouds Booties
If you have leftover bulky weight yarn like Baby Clouds and would like to make newborn booties, here is a quick, yet pretty pattern for you to use. It's a lot like my Bev's VERY Easy Booties pattern. Makes an upsidedown T shape.
1 skein (6 oz) Red Heart Baby Clouds yarn makes about 6 pairs
Size K hook
Chain 17
Row 1: Dc in 2nd ch from hook and in each across. Ch 2 and turn. (Makes 16 dc including the first ch 3)
Row 2: Dc in the ch 2 base - so it looks like there are 2 dc in one stitch., then dc to the end on the row in each stitch. DON'T Ch 2, just turn. (17 dcs - since you must dc in that very last st!)
Row 3: Sl st in top of first 3 dc. Ch 2 to form a dc, then dc in each stitch across - leaving 3 sts unstitched. Ch 2 and turn. (12 Dcs)
Row 4: Dc in the ch 2 base - so it looks like there are 2 dc in one stitch, then dc in each dc to end of row. End off by cutting a yarn tail about 13" long, and pull through last stitch. (13 Dcs)
Fold bootie in half and stitch around seam. Turn bootie right side out, and fold down top row of the cuff.
ENJOY!!
If you have no place to send them, I can sure use them for UMC hospital in Vegas.
Tube socks anyone????
Good morning!
Anyone out there want to make newborn sized tube socks for UMC hospital in Vegas?
I have 2 garbage bags of newborn hats for them, some from the recent hat challenge... and I am trying to make booties to 'match'. I don't have all the same yarns as others used to make the hats, so I am doing basic colors and they will match some hat in that pile!
I am also going to display some of them at the county fair here at my humanitarian booth in April, before donating them to UMC.
Patterns?
or
http://www.bevscountrycottage.com/babytubesocks.html
Or use your own. In fact they don't have to be tube socks-- they can be booties, I am just on a tube sock kick right now. :)
If you can help even with one pair, please send them to:
MITTEN-ALONG- Last part!!!
Here you go! The final thing you can do for those mittens, IF you want to. Works well so little ones don't keep losing their mittens!
Part 5
COAT STRING for young children's mittens
Join yarn to one cuff at seam stitches and then sc around entire cuff.
* make a ch about 2-2 1/2 feet long and join with sl st to other mitten at seam.
For extra warmth, use double yarn and brush the inside of the mitten with a hair brush to make it 'fuzzy' and soft.
Hope all of who wanted to were able to make some mitts! Tomorrow I will post the entire pattern as it was on here for the mitten along. That way you can print it out in full if you wish. :)
Is anyone still with me?
Today we are finishing up that first mitten! YEAH!
... tomorrow you will learn how to add a coat string for younger children, if you wish!
FINISHING: If you have not done so already, cut a 15" yarn tail.
Thread your yarn tail onto a yarn needle.
Fold your mitten in half lengthwise & sew around matching stitches on one side of the mitten with the other side. (See the photo)
As you sew the tip of the thumb or top of the mittens, run the needle and yarn under the few top stitches across to the other side, pull slightly. This will gather the top a tiny bit.
Continue sewing down the other side.
Now this is where you can take a bristle hair brush and gently brush the inside of the mitt to make it slightly fluffy.
Turn right side out. *See photo
Extra Cuff: Single crochet around the cuff for 2 or 3 rounds. Single crochet in every other 'ridge' around the 1st time to make the wrist tighter. (This will cut your number of stitches in half)
Make another mitten the same.
See you tomorrow!!
