My daughter and Costa Rica

My daughter Katie is signing up for a Youth Volunteer program so she can go to Costa Rica this summer to help children there. She has thoroughly researched the program and is so excited.

She needs to earn/fundraise about $3500 to be able to go.
Does ANYONE on here have fundraising ideas to share? She is 17, and has a part time job, but that isn’t going to quite cut it so fundraising is what we need to do.

Examine what Ezra Taft Benson (former secretary of Agriculture, and later President of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints) said back in 1966 (I was only 8 years old!!). Then think how much more socialism is creeping into our government today... PLEASE examine all the candidates running for office this year and vote after prayerfully considering what they are going to do further to America.

Christmas is about CHRIST

Since this is the Christmas season which is the celebration of Jesus' birth, I wanted to share with you what Jesus means to me as a woman, a mother, a daughter, a sister.

Jesus Christ is my dearest, most trusted friend. He is my spiritual Elder Brother, my confident, someone I can turn to in my darkest hours, when tears sting my eyes, and hurt my head. He is there for me to talk to. Jesus knows your every pain, and He has suffered beneath each one. He knows how to cope, and you can find Him just a prayer away.

He is the Christ, my Savior. He is the only way back to Heavenly Father. He is our mediator with the Father, so we can someday return to live with Him and with the Father at the end of this mortal life.

He lives, He really lives. He was crucified, He died, but he rose again, and He is alive with a glorified and exalted body. Jesus is concerned for each one of us.

Heavenly Father is also very personal and real to me. He is not some immense blob that fills space, yet is small enough to fit in your heart, as I was once taught. He has a glorified, perfected body. His only begotten son, Jesus Christ works as one with Him and with the Holy Ghost to bring to pass the 'Immortality and eternal life of man." (Moses 1:39) We were created in His image. He has stated that to us in the Old Testament. We look like Him and He looks like us.

While Jesus walked this beautiful earth, He set the perfect example for us. I believe that he came to earth to teach us a better way to live. He taught us by His actions how to live, how to treat others, and what is really important in this life and in the next.

He taught us to love one another, be kind and good to others, only speak to others and of others in a kind way, and He showed us how to heal and bless our brothers and sisters.

The Atonement
I know that Jesus Christ paid them price for each of our sins in the garden of Gethsemane. He suffered so much and the burden there was so great, He shed drops of real blood in His agonizing sweat. He even asked that if it were possible that this 'cup' be taken from Him. I love Him because even though he felt as though He could not bear the awful weight that was placed upon His sinless shoulders, He loved us so much, and knew there was no other way but to suffer for us, and he didn't give up. I am always amazed when I think of how incredibly unfair this was, in all its eternal necessity. He NEVER once gave in to the temptations that plagued Him, while we often give in at the drop of a hat. I think of that each time I do something wrong, how I added to that pain. It drives me to my knees to ask for forgiveness. If we strive diligently to do what is right and accept His atonement asking forgiveness each time we sin, we will be forgiven.

We can only get back to Father through Jesus Christ and we must go to Him to ask. His death on the cross was his final humiliation and blow. He was the only perfect man to ever walk this earth. I know of His divinity, I speak of Him to others, I teach my children of him and try to live as He did in every way I can. I teach them to do the same. They know of His love for them because as babies I whispered into their little ears, "Who loves you?" Then I told them ~ Heavenly Father loves you, Jesus loves you, mommy and daddy love you, brothers and sisters love you. They understood this. I feel combining it with what is 'real' to them right now, the love of family, they will learn how real Heavenly Father and Jesus are too.

Saved by Works alone?
I do not believe you will get to heaven through works alone but I do believe that we are here to be tested, to learn to live a Christ-like life in every way we can, to accept Jesus Christ as our personal Savior and to live by faith. In the times when Paul taught that we are saved by grace, he was indeed stating an eternal truth. Only Christ could have gone through the Atonement. Only He, being so pure, could have ever paid the great price. The Pharisees at that time, went really overboard on emphasizing the great works they did. They applauded themselves and built themselves up to make others look bad. They lived strictly by the letter of the law. So Paul needed to speak directly to them regarding their works... he had to make certain they understood that no matter what they did, it would not give them Eternal life.

The Bible teaches the importance of faith combined with works that exemplify Christ and the way He lived. There is much more to this than merely saying 'Jesus is the Savior', even the devils know who He is! And it doesn't do them any good.

We must try to become like Him, to live as He did, to work with Him in helping others, and especially in becoming better people. We must follow His example in all things. We can only do that if we read and learn of Him, and use His blessed gift of the Atonement, to repent and come unto Christ.

You will find teachings on faith and works in the King James Bible where we read: In James 2:14-26
"14 What doth it profit, my brethren, though a man say he hath faith, and have not works? can faith save him?
15 If a brother or sister be naked, and destitute of daily food,
16 And one of you say unto them, Depart in peace, be ye warmed and filled; notwithstanding ye give them not those things which are needful to the body; what doth it profit?
17 Even so faith, if it hath not works, is dead, being alone.
18 Yea, a man may say, Thou hast faith, and I have works: shew me thy faith without thy works, and I will shew thee my faith by my works.
19 Thou believest that there is one God; thou doest well: the devils also believe, and tremble.
20 But wilt thou know, O vain man, that afaith without work is dead?
21 Was not Abraham our father justified by works, when he had offered Isaac his son upon the altar?
22 Seest thou how faith wrought with his works, and by aworks was faith made perfect?
23 And the scripture was fulfilled which saith, Abraham believed God, and it was imputed unto him for brighteousness: and he was called the Friend of God.
24 Ye see then how that by works a man is justified, and not by faith only.
25 Likewise also was not Rahab the harlot justified by works, when she had received the messengers, and had sent them out another way?
26 For as the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without works is dead also."

I want you to know that the Jesus Christ I know was/is a spiritual giant. He loved everyone, even those whom others despised, and those who abused him and spat upon him for no fault of His own. A goal for me to strive for. When He rose from the dead, He appeared first to women. He went to those who were thought of in society as mere chattel. He knew that these women would be spiritually receptive to the truth.

He worked miracles, he reached out to those in need, he helped others whom mankind thought of as 'the least of these'. My favorite passages of scripture are found in the Book of Mormon in 3 Nephi 17 where Christ takes the little children and blesses them and angels minister to them.

While blessing lives, Jesus never hesitated to reach out and bless His fellow brothers and sisters with His loving touch. He never complained when helping others was not convenient, or when he was exhausted, and he never wearied of well-doing.

Jesus took care of little details. He forgave people who lied about Him, who wanted to tear Him down, who spit upon Him.

He showed us a better way and asked us to try to be like Him. He gives me something to reach for, an exalted goal to achieve, a better way ~ the way to true happiness in this life and the next life.

Because of His perfect example, I try every day to reach out to others, to live so others will want to know why I am different, so that others can see a 'light', and hopefully they will want to have that Light and happiness and strength in their own lives. It is not my light I try to let shine, but the light of Christ given by Heavenly Father. It is what makes me have a desire to help other people and to live a good life, and to become the woman of God I am supposed to be. He taught us to:

"let your light so shine before this people, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father who is in heaven."

I have a painting of Christ reaching down and lifting us each time we fall, of His great strength filling our gaps of strength, of His bearing my burdens if I take the time to ask Him for help. I can feel His love as I hold each of my children and now my grandchildren in my arms.

I know He is my Savior, He is my friend in this life and in eternity and will always be there for me as I remember Him.

May this Christmas find us reaching beyond our current knowledge of our Savior to find a more perfect knowledge, and may we try to become just like Him, especially in helping others every day we live.

Ok- we all need goals, and I am hideously out of shape, always tired and dragging through the day. I eat healthily bu strolling around the neighborhood twice a day with dogs and/or hubby is not quite cutting it! I have to get back some energy and I think this is my key! I can do these exercises IF I work up the energy and strength again. I used to be really athletic so I know it's still inside this 53 year old body!

In a nutshell:
- Burns as many calories as a 40-60 minutes run.

- Makes your body adapt and improve very quickly.

- Increases metabolism for next 36 hrs

- Takes only FOUR minutes, no excuses.

Hats and scarves for Homeless Veterans

If you love to make hats, why not check with your local American Legion Auxiliary to see if hats and scarves are needed for your local Vets. Many are sadly, homeless, and cold and forgotten. You can remember them this year by making hats to help warm them. There are both men and women former armed forces who are homeless, but more men than women, so more 'manly colors' are needed.

You can loom knit, hand knit, or crochet them, or even sew them from fleece fabric. Be sure to used dark colors, mixed with cheery brights and avoid white or cream because these tend to get dirty faster. You can even hold a plan dark color together with a bright sock yarn for more warmth. I like to make hats with maybe navy blue and a few stripes of colorful variegated yarns!

Scarves are needed too:

Scarves are always welcome too and really serve to ward off those cold winds in many ways. Here one I started the other day for our Library Knit and Crochet for Others group.

A simple scarf can be knitted using size 11 needles and one or two strands of worsted weight yarn.

Cast one 18 sts and knit until scarf is 50" - 60" long.

Cast off and weave in yarn ends.

In light of the decision of New York's Mayor Bloomberg to not invite any clergy or even the first responders to the Commemoration Ceremony on 9/11, this event was created to honor all those who were directly touched by the horrific event of 9/11/2001.

Will you join in this United Action of Prayer?

It requires that everyone, everywhere, no matter what you are doing to stop for one minute at precisely 9 a.m. and 11 a.m. on 9/11 to offer a prayer or to just have a minute of silence to honor all those who died, those who gave their lives, all first responders and their families and the families who lost their loved ones.

Let's unite with Americans across the country to let them know that America has not forgotten and never will.

At first I thought this was one of those scam emails but I was just watching FOX News and sure enough, it's TRUE!

Bloomberg apparently doesn't want to 'offend' any one religion by having clergy from certain churches there and maybe not others. Give me a break! Have like a Priest, a Rabbi, and a Protestant minister or something. I am a 'Mormon' and I sure would not be offended if a Jewish Rabbi, or one of the others, stood and prayed for all the people affected by this horrific terrorist attack!

He is calling out the 'Separation of Church and State.' card. Why is it that grown men and women don't understand what was meant by that. It wasn't to keep religion out of everything to do with America, it was to ensure that NO one religion would be the 'state' religion.

The people who helped cement the foundation of this country were religious! They DID pray. They knew they needed God's help and they asked for it, plus they were grateful for the help they received. They wanted a strong government, and if you kick God out, you cannot have that. The just didn't want the country to have one religion, as many countries in Europe do.

And no first responders (????) what? ... Bloomberg says the memorial service is just for the families. I think if he interviewed those families THEY would absolutely want the first responders there! What has happened to America?

I hope you will join me in praying today and tomorrow for all those affected by this horror.

May WE never forget even if our politicians are so jaded by secularism that they could care less; that The United States of America was attacked by cowardly, religious fanatic THUGS.

A couple of days ago I received a letter from Bon of Baby Threads of NH, that stated mittens are badly need in northern NH for this coming winter. She wondered if any crafters out here would like to help make some pairs and I assured her there would be some help! Makes you think

I listened to some wonderful General Conference talks this morning, while I was at work. It got me to thinking... what am I doing to make this world a better place?

Some days my hours, flowing into days, are filled with work, filled with anxious work so that we have enough money to pay the bills. Then, the thoughts pour into my mind, that if I put God first, we will have enough.

This means doing the things I should be always doing, studying scriptures, family and personal prayers, kindness to all. Speak positive thoughts... really get into those scriptures. Write down my thoughts about what I read and incorporate the teachings of Christ into my every hour.

I am working on my 'Personal Progress'- a program for the young women of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. My daughter Katie is also working on it, and all she has to do is finish reading the Book of Mormon to get her medallion. She will receive a necklace too.

I think the moms who complete this get the medallion but not the necklace. That's ok though... I have wanted to finish this for a long time and I am nearly there!! Feels great! It's helped me reach into parts of my spirituality that were a bit dormant I guess and I have grown through the studies and projects.

I am also making items for selling in my ETSY shop; and working on some warm mittens and hats for grandkids. I also starting knitting an old fave pattern for a baby sweater for my newest grandson who is due in a couple of weeks. This is a hoodie so is big and will be for when this little guy is older. But I want to get it done for Christmas.

Meanwhile..
Charity efforts... I am making preemie hats to send to a young girl, Abi, who is making them and collecting them for her Girl Scout Bronze award. Very cool! She is also collecting preemie booties and blankets. If you would like to help too here is some info:

My daughter Katie just went for a walk to the cemetery to place some flowers on our friend's graves. I think it brings her a bit of peace. She put one on my friend Ruth's grave and that means a lot to me. Sometimes I miss Ruth a whole lot! She was a dear friend...

Well the sun is setting and the earth is glorious and peaceful here in the desert. The Lord is mindful of all of us, each of us. He knows what we are going through, and what we need. As we turn to Christ, we will feel inner peace even amidst total turmoil. He is there.

International what?????

Hi everyone!
I was zipping around and saw that next Saturday June 11th is the first 'International Yarn Bombing day'

I just feel like perhaps we could turn this 'event' into something really positive and good... and not just prettying up urban areas with knitted tree coats (!) (AHHHHH-- the wasted yarn that could be used to help warm and comfort others just blows my mind!)

Why not take our yarn stashes and turn them into newborn hats, booties, and blankets wherever we live, to actually help newborns in hospitals near us?

Next Saturday, I am going to commit to knitting or crocheting newborn hats and matching booties. We have company next weekend as our foreign exchange student's parents are flying here to pick her up (and take her back to Germany- sniff, cry, sniff) but I am sure I can take along my crocheting if we are in the car or...)

I am going pledge to make 5 sets! I might be crazy, since I rarely have time to even grab yarn these days, but I want to make a statement of my own. We knitters and crocheters love to use our yarn to pretty up people, especially babies!

Abbreviations: Rnd = round; Ch = chain; sl st = slip stitch; dc = double crochet

Less than 1 oz baby or sport yarn OR soft worsted weight yarn.
Size G or H hook (depending on how tightly you crochet)
Hat is about 5" - 5.5" tall, and measures 5.25" - 5.75" across at the base. * PLEASE make sure newborn hats are at least 5" tall!

TOP of hat - down:
Rnd 1: Chain 4, and join with a slip stitch to form a ring. Chain 3, (counts as a double crochet) then make 14 double crochets inside ring. Join with a slip stitch in top of 1st actual double crochet of previous round (not into the ch 3). (you have15 double crochets)

Rnd 2: Chain 3, dc into the base of the Ch 3. * 1 dc in next dc, 2 dc in next dc, Repeat from * around making sure to dc into the base of the ch 3. (23 sts including ch3)

Join with a slip stitch in top of 1st dc of previous rnd.

Rnd 3: do it the same as the 2nd. (35 dcs including ch3)

Rnds 4 - 10: Ch 3 and make a dc in the same stitch, then dc in each dc around including into base of ch3 of the previous row, joining with a sl st in the top of the 1st dc of the round you just finished.. (Stitch counts: rnd 4 = 36, rnd 5 = 37 - increasing by 1 each rnd)

You can do a final loopy row of ch 4 skip a dc, sc into the next, ch 4, skip a dc, sc into the next etc.
You can also do rnd 10 using an alternating front post and back post dc.
Or sc around for an 11th row using an alternative color.

Little flower: Ch 8, join with a sl st in the first chain, ch 8, join again in that first chain, repeat to make 6 loops/petals. Thread the 2 ends (starting and ending yarn) into the hat, about 1 dc apart. Tie them together 3 times inside the hat.

Hi everyone!
I'm making some 'things' to sell soon; just from my website or here on the blog-not sure. It's all in the planning stages right now. It's really focused my attention, especially attention to detail, to make something high quality and with a little 'extra'. It's something I need to do for my humanitarian items too.

My ideas for what to sell are including, but not necessarily limited to:
* Crocheted and ribboned hair pretties for girls
* Adorable baby hat and diaper cover sets
* Hand-made tied quilts for American Girl and other 18" dolls

and my mind keeps turning the wheels with new ideas. Trying to not let it rule my time, you know, but I am making these things to help raise money for someone I love who is going through a terrible time right now, so I am a bit consumed. ♥

Meanwhile, Seminary Graduation is just around the corner, June 2nd, and that's in less than 2 weeks now, so my life at work is about to become really busy.

I have solved my insomnia problem too... for one thing hubby is now using a CPAP and no more snoring! No more thrashing around all night long, so I am sleeping better too! Also, I decided to relax I would re-read my fave set of 'kids' books--the Little House on the Prairie Series. I LOVE THOSE BOOKS and stories of life in the 1800's! Love Love Love Laura Ingalls Wilders writing style, and I just drift off to sleep.

Good morning everyone!
I wanted to tell you of a new website that my friend Susanne Fein has put together:

It's pretty basic but I talked to her on the phone last night and she is so excited about it, and LOVES to hear from people when they click the contact page and send her a message. She told me this is her whole life now and she wakes up so excited to be helping all the different places in Vegas, and not just UMC although she loved that too.

I asked her what was needed most, and she said layette items... (for preemies, newborns, through toddlers) baby blankets, hats, booties, onesies, sweaters, baby lotion, washcloths, gowns, pacifiers, paper diapers, etc etc. AND... she would love to see more items for little kids (4-7 yr olds) --- blankets, new stuffed animals, handmade teddy bears, dolls- things like that.

But she told me she just loves getting packages from all of you. It makes her day! She can also use walker totes, lapghans, shawls, slippers for elderly-- basically just about anything you make she can find a home for it!

Keep in mind that this is Vegas, and the temps are already in the 90s and soon to be 100s, so winter gear is not needed at the moment. I have 8 stuffed garbage bags to bring to her!!!!!!! Stuff that you guys made fore the fair! Wait till she sees all of it!

The Fair Humanitarian Booth!

I have lots of photos from the Clark Cty Fair last week, but I will only post a few here, cos I have not had time to shrink them. Anyhow we had the humanitarian booth where we show lots of handmade items for various charities, usually LDS Humanitarian, and then local places in Vegas area.

A tribute to our friend Ruth Doxey who used to help with the booth and was my partner with 'Crafting Angels'. We miss you Ruth. ♥

This year I put patterns with the items you could make with those patterns. It's hard to see here, but it worked great.

We taught these 2 sweet girls to whip stitch granny squares together and they loved it! They wanted to do more and more and came back to help a couple of times.

Many of the granny squares that were donated by so many wonderful crocheters! Thanks!

Newborn and preemie baby items. These are always popular for the fair goers to see. They are quite the conversation pieces, and always get crafters interested in helping hospitals near them. These items will go to Volunteer Angels as well.

Bev's Charity Challenge group

A few years ago I started this yahoo group (*see below) of wonderful gals who knit, crochet and sew for humanitarian causes all over the world and it's called "Bev's Charity Challenge". I have a great friend, Chris Hilfiker, who is my brilliant 'numbers cruncher'. I could never run the group without her.

Each member sets a personal, annual goal to try to meet. Some choose 12--one item for each month, some members choose 1000 or more! (Which boggles my mind!).

It's a fun group where each member is required to set up a file in our numbers database after they join, and then they update their file with at least ONE handmade item per month, preferably members update each Saturday. On tough months (and we all have those), or months when they have a huge item to make like an afghan, they can just update the date in there once a week or so.

The group generates quite a bit of email so for those who don't want all that email, they can set their membership at 'daily digest' or 'special notices'. We love to hear from members, and so feel free to write, and post links to your fave patterns, or ideas to help others. Often we have prayer requests for members or their families and friends, and we all pull together to pray for those individuals. Membership is primarily different denominations of Christians, but we do welcome people of all faiths.

We occasionally hold super fun contests and members volunteer to donate prizes for those!! I love the contests! The great thing about those is, the winner is not necessarily the one who donates the most each time, it's about actually making something to help the particular charity Chris and I choose for that contest. For each item donated, the donator received ONE chance to win in the final draw. So if they donate 3 items, they get their name put in the hat 3 times, if they donate 37 items they get 37 chances!

We don't choose a certain charity you have to donate to each month, but occasionally we will hear of a need and encourage members to make things for that particular cause. Normally though, each member chooses where to donate the things they make. Well, I posted an * up above which explains more about how the group started so here you go, if you are curious:

Several years ago I attended a BYU women's conference up in Provo, Utah. Each year at those conferences we attend wonderful lectures and classes, and we also get kits to make things for people in need. At the end of the conference, which normally consists of like 15,000+ LDS women, they give a preliminary report of how many items were made that year. It's always a grand number as you can imagine.

Well, one time the final speaker spoke of how she and other representatives of the Church, were in a country - I want to say one in Africa; where they handed out Newborn Kits to as many moms as they had kits. In many countries there, they do not let you take your newborn home until you have clothing for the baby...

This one new mom came running over and begged for a kit for her baby, but they were out. It turns out that they were about 500 kits shorts on that trip, but they vowed they would NOT run short again. I cried when I heard about this poor mama, with her arms wrapped around the Relief Society Presidents legs, begging her for even a pair of booties or diapers for her little one, but there were no more. I vowed then and there, that I would personally make 500 pairs of newborn booties for their kits so they would have those to take next time!! This was in April or May of that year and I actually made my goal and made 500 pairs that year to send up to Salt Lake City! I about went nuts mind you, but that was how the Charity Challenge group got it's start. Others wanted to join me and make goals and crochet and knit their goals too for that year.

Anyhow, even ONE pair of booties would have helped that mama, so never underestimate the profound power of ONE! It might seem like nothing to you, but to someone in need it is everything!

Hat pattern from BYU Women's Conference 2003:
2 oz worsted weight yarn
Size I hook
Chain 39 sts
Sc in 2nd ch from hook, ch 1 and turn
Sc in 2nd sc from hook, ch 1 and turn
Continue for 54 rows
Fold hat in half and stitch seam shut
Weave through top of hat and pull tightly.
Make a pom pom and stitch into top hole.

We currently have few than 100 members of Bev's Charity Challenge, but we would love to get more active charity crafters involved... if you are dedicated to helping others... if you can knit, crochet or sew... if you are willing to set a goal and then keep track in a database... we NEED you!

Yesterday, 2-11-2011 I became a citizen of the United States of America!!

I promise I will post pix and info about it when I get a chance. My son Shaun took a photo of me with the judge who swore us in, and I got one of the federal building in Vegas where it happened.

Hi everyone!
It seems like I post on Facebook a lot but not on my blog so much anymore. I apologize for that. Just wanted to check in and fill everyone in on my life as it is these days.

So, I have had a goal for many years, to become a US citizen, but with the lack of $$$ to do that it was only a dream. Well, last year my friend's mom sponsored me and I filled out all the paperwork and mailed it in! Last week, I took my citizenship tests, and passed, and today I received notice that I will be sworn in On February 11, 2011 - So 2-11-2011. I love that date! :) ♥ I am so excited!

I feel like dancing on clouds.

I want to celebrate somehow, but not sure how exactly...

I was out walking this morning, thinking about what a blessing it is to live in this country, and to live in this safe valley, where I have such good friends and neighbors, and where we receive many blessings. I am thankful to Heavenly Father for bringing our family here, and blessing us as He does.

My neighbor is moving and she has been going through her enormous stack of boxes and as she comes across yarn she is giving it to me to make into mittens and hats and whatever... it's been like Christmas every few days for me as she finds more. ♥

Speaking of yarn... BYU Women's Conference is at the end of April and I am so looking forward to attending this year. It is the ultimate break for me every year as I meet with good friends up there and we sit together listening to uplifting talks and making items for humanitarian causes.

And, up and coming--- the humanitarian booth is something I am tackling again and I am changing a little bit, what I do there. No loom knitting this year. Instead I am collecting 6" granny squares and teaching people to assemble them into lapghans for seniors.

Make this a beautiful year of helping others!!

Start the new year off right by making a few of these baby headbands for baby showers or to your local hospitals to give to the new mamas of little girls.

You will need a few yards of baby yarn in 2 colors if you want to add a flower, and a size G hook.
Chain 6
1) Sc in 2nd chain from hook and in each chain across. (5 sc)
2) Sc in 2nd sc from hook (back loops only) and in each sc across. (5 sc)
3-10" ) Repeat row 2 till desired length. End off, and whip stitch the 1st row and last row together to form the headband. (remember that headband will stretch and you want it a bit smaller than actual headsize so it will stay on.)

Flower:
Use another color, chain 7, join with slip stitch.
Chain 10, join with sc inside the loop, repeat at least 6 times to form petals. End off. Use beginning thread and ending thread to tie the flower to the headband.

Larger Headbands
Adjust the size by making a larger starting chain (for the width) and using thicker yarn, but repeat the sc pattern, and make it longer to fit around larger head.

Bake some cookies for a neighbor:
Lynn's Peanut Butter Balls for the holidays
1 cup peanut butter,
1/2 cup butter,
2 cups powdered sugar,
dash salt,
1 pkg. chocolate almond bark.
Mix together p. butter, sugar, butter and salt. Form into small balls
and chill on cookie sheet 2-3 hours. Dip in melted almond bark and drop
onto waxed paper. Chill store in refrigerator.

This talk by President Monson was one of my favorites as it is something I have learned in the past year or so that I NEED to work on-- so I wanted to share some of it with you. It's on having an 'Attitude of Gratitude' so we can be happy:

"President Smith is telling us that a prayerful life is the key to possessing gratitude.

Do material possessions make us happy and grateful? Perhaps momentarily. However, those things which provide deep and lasting happiness and gratitude are the things which money cannot buy: our families, the gospel, good friends, our health, our abilities, the love we receive from those around us. Unfortunately, these are some of the things we allow ourselves to take for granted.

The English author Aldous Huxley wrote, “Most human beings have an almost infinite capacity for taking things for granted.”

We often take for granted the very people who most deserve our gratitude. Let us not wait until it is too late for us to express that gratitude. Speaking of loved ones he had lost, one man declared his regret this way: “I remember those happy days, and often wish I could speak into the ears of the dead the gratitude which was due them in life, and so ill returned.”

I also loved this talk from LDS Women's General Conference about Charity also from President Monson. I know this man is a Prophet of God. He is inspired. He speaks truth. I am so grateful he is in tune with the Holy Spirit and can guide each of us who will listen and apply the teachings he gives us from our loving Heavenly Father.

I consider charity—or “the pure love of Christ”—to be the opposite of criticism and judging. In speaking of charity, I do not at this moment have in mind the relief of the suffering through the giving of our substance. That, of course, is necessary and proper. Tonight, however, I have in mind the charity that manifests itself when we are tolerant of others and lenient toward their actions, the kind of charity that forgives, the kind of charity that is patient.

I have in mind the charity that impels us to be sympathetic, compassionate, and merciful, not only in times of sickness and affliction and distress but also in times of weakness or error on the part of others.

There is a serious need for the charity that gives attention to those who are unnoticed, hope to those who are discouraged, aid to those who are afflicted. True charity is love in action. The need for charity is everywhere.

Needed is the charity which refuses to find satisfaction in hearing or in repeating the reports of misfortunes that come to others, unless by so doing, the unfortunate one may be benefited. The American educator and politician Horace Mann once said, “To pity distress is but human; to relieve it is godlike.”

Charity is having patience with someone who has let us down. It is resisting the impulse to become offended easily. It is accepting weaknesses and shortcomings. It is accepting people as they truly are. It is looking beyond physical appearances to attributes that will not dim through time. It is resisting the impulse to categorize others.

Holiday cooking!

Christy's Easy Peasy Pumpkin Cookies
1 Box Spice Cake Mix
1 small can Pumpkin (about 1 1/2 cups) (I used half a large can)
1 cup chocolate chips
Mix together in a bowl, then place by spoonfuls onto cookie sheet. Bake at 375 for 12-14 mins.

I needed this today, so badly. Our bills have been mounting. I am paying them off as I can, but it just never seems to get better, and we have more expenses coming up that I don't know how I will pay, but I will.
Somedays, it just all gets to be too TOO much to handle. I cry to God, but ... nothing. I don't want to worry about finances anymore; it's been so many years, that I was thinking instead of saying 'for richer, for poorer' in wedding vows, we should skip the richer part. ;)

I know, it will all be ok in the end. But for now, this short video, eased a little of the weight on my shoulders, soothed my heart, and dried my tears, so I hope by my posting it here, it will help someone else too.

God does love us. We must be patient, do our part, and be patient and not want the whole marshmallow right now!

When I was walking yesterday AM I found some wonderful pebbles for my pebble pouches, and realized it's been a while since I had any orders for them.
I am not going to have a lot of time coming up starting next week, as school starts on the 30th, and I work a lot more once school gets rolling. SO...

Just a quick reminder that the Osmond Colors Project is still up and running! If you want to join us please go to the page listed above, and then click on the link there to let me know. I will need your first name, last initial and your state.

We are making winter items for our local shelters, public schools, domestic violence shelters, hospitals, you name it, for the kids out there!

These are tough times, and many adults are unemployed. By this winter their babies and children are going to need warm hats, mittens, scarves, sweaters, blankets, whatever you see a need for in your area. Talk to people, see what is most needed. It might be that you live where it is warm, but you could make teddy bears, or cancer caps for those little ones. We can all help.

Now, get your Osmond colors yarn, and start knitting or crocheting, there is lots of time to make a lot of items.

Originally I decided that 1,000 items would be a great number, but let me tell you, after just a few weeks we are already 1/3 there! Can you believe that? Only a few people have reported in too. It's a miracle in the making every single day and I thank you for being so kind.

Here is a fun mitten pattern in several sizes that will work well for this:

Bev's Marvelous Mittens
This version copyright 1981- 2010 Beverly Qualheim. All Rights Reserved

Materials: size G or H crochet hook (depending on your own tension) and 2-3 oz of 4 ply worsted yarn or wool. If you use 100% wool, these mittens will felt when washed in hot water and dried in hot dryer so make them the next size up.

Chain 55 (5-7years) 63 (8-12 years) 77 (teen/adult years)

Row 1: Sc into next 7(7)(7) chs to form cuff, then sl st next 3 sts for wrist, sc in next 15 (19)(26) sts for hand, sl st next 4 sts for top, sc in next 15 (19) (26) sts for hand, sl st next 3 sts for wrist, sc in next 7 (7)(7) sts for cuff, ch 1 to turn all rows.

Row 2: (you will be going into the 2nd ch from hook and into back loops ONLY -see photo to right), single crochet into each sc and sl st in each sl st of previous row.
Repeat Row 2 for desired width of hand (usually 5 ridges for kids, more for adults).

THUMB: Shape thumb: Keeping in sequence work cuff, wrist and 5 (6) (6) sts of hand. Ch 12 (14) (14), fold the mitten in half and join with a sc to opposite side of mitten (meaning- join in the 5th, 6th sc up from the wrist) See photo opposite.
Now work back down toward cuff - 4 sc (5 sc) (5 sc) in next 4 (5) (5) sts, sl st in next 3 sts (wrist), and 7 (8) (8) sc in last 7 (8) (8) sts for cuff. Ch 1 and turn.

Next Row: Repeat pattern to thumb, at thumb - sc in next 5 chs (6 chs), sl st next 2 sts, (this forms top of fingers) sc in remaining 5 sts (6 sts) (6 sts) of ch, finish in pattern down toward wrist again.
Repeat last row 3 - 4 times to form the thumb, working in the scs and sl sts. End off leaving enough yarn to sew completely around mitten.

FINISHING: Fold mitten in half & sew around, as you sew the tip of the thumb or top of the mittens, run the needle and yarn under a few sts and then across to the other side, pull slightly. Turn right side out.

Extra Cuff: Sc around the cuff for 3 rounds. Sc in every other 'ridge' around the 1st time to make the wrist a bit tighter. (This will cut your number of sts in half)

Make another mitten the same.

COAT STRING for young children's mittens
Join yarn to one cuff at seam stitches and then sc around entire cuff, make a ch about 2-2 1/2 feet long and join with sl st to other mitten at seam. Sc around that mitten too, and you now have a string to thread mittens through coat. For extra warmth, use double yarn and brush the inside of the mitten with a hair brush to make it 'fuzzy' and soft.

A new place to help in Vegas

My friend Suzanne Fein, who used to be the volunteer supervisor for UMC hospital; is now retired but is still helping those in need. Her new project, soon to be charity, is 'VOLUNTEER ANGELS' and you can find information on it here:

Basically, she is collecting handmade and storebought items for preemies through seniors, but mostly items for children and babies. She will deliver them in person to several places in the Vegas area such as UMC Hospital, Safe Nest, Child Haven and the Salvation Army, as well as some residential homes for Senior Citizens.

Some of the items she needs are:
Preemie and newborn hats and booties, blankets, basic layettes, children's quilts, sweaters, new socks, hats, mittens, and more. Plus, lapghans for seniors, and afghans for them.

I am going to start making some 6" granny squares for them, and see if some of my friends here want to help with that and we can assemble them into seniors lapghans for Suzanne to deliver.

Our troops

Your cell phone is in your pocket.
He clutches the cross hanging on his chain next to his dog tags.
He knows he may not see some of his buddies again..

You walk down the beach, staring at all the pretty girls.
He patrols the streets, searching for insurgents and terrorists.
He's told he will be held over an extra 2 months.

You call your girlfriend and set a date for tonight.
He waits for the mail to see if there is a letter from home.
You hug and kiss your girlfriend, like you do everyday.
He holds his letter close and smells his love's perfume.

You roll your eyes as a baby cries.
He gets a letter with pictures of his new child, and wonders if they'll ever meet.

You criticize your government, and say that war never solves anything.
He sees the innocent tortured and killed by their own people and remembers why he is fighting. (EXACTLY!!!!!!!!!!!)

You hear the jokes about the war, and make fun of men like him.
He hears the gunfire, bombs and screams of the wounded.

You see only what the media wants you to see.
He sees the broken bodies lying around him.

You are asked to do some thing by your parents. You don't.
He does exactly what he is told even if it puts his life in danger.

You stay at home and watch TV.
He takes whatever time he is given to call, write home, sleep, and eat.

You crawl into your soft bed, with down pillows, and get comfortable.
He tries to sleep but gets woken by mortars and helicopters all night long.

Hey! at least we have those places in this country. Thank your Heavenly Father every night that you live in a country where we have these freedoms and luxuries. And we didn't get them by listening to a bunch of complaining people who murmur but do nothing concrete to help!
We got those freedoms from brave men and women like these pictured, putting their lives on the line.

Well, it isn't cold right now, but it will be soon and this little project is for Osmond fans and other crafters to knit and crochet items for CHILDREN ~ warm hats, scarves and or mittens in, you've got it, OSMOND COLORS from the 1970's!!

Back in the 1970's the Osmonds wore outfits and scarves that reflected each of their colors back then.

Alan = Blue

Wayne = Orange

Merrill = Black

Jay = Green

Donny = Purple

Marie = Pink

Jimmy = Red

If you are a knitter or crocheter or loom knitter, you might be asking "How can I help?" It's easy! Simply *find a place near you who might need some warm hats, scarves and/or mittens for the kids this winter. Call them up and ask what their needs are or will be, find some yarn in fun Osmond colors-- choose your fave Osmond's color, or use all of them, needles or hooks and winter patterns and get started!

Hope your summer is going well! Here is a yummy recipe to take along on those camping trips, long car rides, or hiking trips.

HIKING GORP (no processed sugar)
2 cups raisins
1 cup unsalted cashews
1 cup sunflower seeds
1 cup Chinese noodles
1/4 tsp cinnamon
Mix together in a ziplock and take along on car rides, camping, hiking, just going to the beach. You can also add other dried fruits and nuts.

Cool edge on a dishcloth!

This edge could be used on blankets too. The video shows her crocheting around my dishcloth pattern.

Basket-Weave Dishcloth
Copyright 2000, 2009 Beverly A. Qualheim

My mother used to make blankets using this stitch, so I figured it would make a good dishcloth too! These cloths last a really long time too!

Materials:
Size 8 knitting needles
2 oz skein of Sugar and Cream worsted weight cotton ~ or your fave brand

Cast on 30 stitches
Row 1: k5, p5, k5, p5, k5, p5
Rows 2-5: repeat row 1
Row 6: p5, k5, p5, k5, p5, k5
Rows 7-10: repeat row 6
Rows 11-15: repeat row 1
Rows 16-20: repeat row 6

Keep going in this manner until you have desired length of cloth, or through 50 rows. Looks very pretty. Can also be knitted using some netting yarn intertwined with the cotton, to make a scrubby type cloth.

I also added a 'READERS FEEDBACK' in the dropdown menu. It's for people to email me comments about the website, how they have used the patterns, etc.

I'd love to have a forum on there, but just am not sure how to create one actually ON my site, not one people leave the site to go to.

I am also thinking of having a 'HOW TO KNIT' page and a "HOW TO CROCHET' page, with links to tutorials, abbreviations on site, links to you-tube videos for various techniques... anything else you would like to see? My mother died 27 years ago, when I was a young mom. So I can't wish her a Happy Mother's Day tomorrow. I hope by the way I conduct my life, by the way I am raising and loving my children and grandchildren, that I honor her memory and bring her much joy in Heaven. I love you mom...

All women are 'Mothers' whether or not we give birth to, or are privileged to raise a child.
We nurture many.
We tend to needs that no one else can tend to.
We embrace little ones who are crying.
We tie shoelaces, and wipe runny noses.
'Boo-boos' require a kiss from us.
We mend hearts with a word.
We lift burdened minds with a smile.
Little birds are fed by us.
Flowers are watered by us, and blossom.
Songs sung by us fill the air with joy.
The world is a better place, because there are women in it.
We are all 'Mothers'.

So many mom need your talents to help lift them and bring them joy. Please find a hospital near you this week who can use handmade hats, booties, blankets, sweaters and so forth.

Washcloth to make for home or any Humanitarian Aid cause

Size approx. 6.5" square

Size H crochet hook and 1 oz cotton yarn
Chain 25
Row 1: 3 DC in 3rd ch from hook; *(skip 1 ch, sc in next, skip 1 ch, 3 dc (shell made) in next); repeat from * across row. End with 3 dc in last chain, ch 3, turn.
Row 2: 2 dc in base of chain 3 (shell), sc in 2nd dc (middle of shell), skip 1 st, 3 dc in sc, sk 1, sc in middle st of shell; repeat across. Last st is sc in middle of shell. Ch 3, turn.
Row 3: Sc in middle dc of shell, skip 1 st, 3 dc in sc, sk 1, sc in middle st of shell; repeat across, ending with 3 dc. Ch 3, turn.
Repeat Rows 2 and 3 for 15 rows. End off and weave in yarn tails.

Good morning all!
I am still around, but have not spent much time online or posting on my blog. I will do so again soon as I have some things in mind.

Meanwhile, here is a pattern of mine you may wish to make for someone you love as Easter is just around the corner:

Materials: Crochet hook size H
Scraps of thin worsted 4 ply yarn or sport weight This pattern is crocheted in the round.

Start: Ch 2, then 4 sc in 2nd ch from hook
Rnd 1: 2 sc in each sc around to total 8
Rnd 2: *1 sc in first sc and 2 sc in next sc, repeat from* (12 sts)
Rnd 3: * 1 sc in each of the next 2 sc then 2 sc in next sc, repeat from * around. (16 sts)
Rnd 4: * 1 sc in each of the next 3 sc then 2 sc in next sc, repeat from * around. (20 sts)
Rnd 5: * 1 sc in each of the next 4 sc then 2 sc in the next sc, repeat from * around. (24 sts)
Rnd 6: sc in each sc around to total 24
Rnd 7-8: chain 1 and repeat rnd 6 (24 sts)
Rnd 9-10: *sc in first 2 sc then sc 2 sc tog* repeat from * around, to start decrease for top of egg. (add a little stuffing inside the egg now- then continue to crochet around above it)
Rnd 11: *sc in first sc then sc 2 sc tog* and repeat from * around
Rnd 12: sc 2 sc tog around
Tie off and weave ends through with yarn needle to secure.

Recipe for Empty tomb biscuits (Roll dough works better)
One biscuit rolled out to about three inches.
Wrap the rolled biscuit around a large marshmallow and seal the edges very tight.
(someone said to spray a cupcake liner with PAM spray and put the roll upside down in the sprayed cupcake liner. This makes for quicker clean up in case the roll is not sealed tight. Bake for 10 minutes. Serve

When you eat the rolls, or biscuits discuss how the roll is empty like Christ's tomb was empty.
1- Now upon the first day of the week, very early in the morning, they came unto the sepulcher, bringing the spices which they had prepared, and certain other with them.
2- And they found the stone rolled away from the sepulcher.
3- And they entered in, and found not the body of the Lord Jesus.

Look at this lady - Let us never forget! Irena Sendler

There recently was a death of a 98 year-old lady named Irena. During WWII, Irena, got permission to work in the Warsaw Ghetto, as a Plumbing/Sewer specialist. She had an 'ulterior motive' .. She KNEW what the Nazi's plans were for the Jews, (being German.) Irena smuggled infants out in the bottom of the tool box she carried and she carried in the back of her truck a burlap sack, (for larger kids..)

She also had a dog in the back that she trained to bark when the Nazi soldiers let her in and out of the ghetto. The soldiers of course wanted nothing to do with the dog and the barking covered the kids/infants noises..

During her time of doing this, she managed to smuggle out and save 2500 kids/infants. She was caught, and the Nazi's broke both her legs, arms and beat her severely. Irena kept a record of the names of all the kids she smuggled out and kept them in a glass jar, buried under a tree in her back yard.

After the war, she tried to locate any parents that may have survived it and reunited the family. Most had been gassed. Those kids she helped got placed into foster family homes or adopted.

In 2007 Irena was up for the Nobel Peace Prize ... She was not selected.

Now, more than ever, with Iraq , Iran , and others, claiming the Holocaust to be 'a myth,' it's imperative to make sure the world never forgets, because there are others who would like to do it again.

Lunchboxers has teamed up with the One Heart Foundation to distribute 4,000 beanies, scarves and gloves to families throughout Utah. The donations began reaching the 30 schools on Monday, February 1, 2010 and will continue through Friday, February 5, 2010.

Lunchboxers is the largest school lunch caterer in Utah, serving over 35 charter, private and daycare schools. Lunchboxers also facilitates the National School Lunch Program by ensuring nutritious meals that meet Child Nutrition Standards. The One Heart Foundation is a local charity that was founded by the Osmond family here in Utah. Lunchboxers and the One Heart Foundation have teamed up to help struggling families during this difficult economic downturn.

Answering the need for a good school lunch catering system in Utah, Lunchboxers has served more than 2,000 lunches each day since August, 2009.
