Donny Osmond's Birthday, purple mittens and UMC preemie patterns!
Tomorrow is Donny Osmond's 49th birthday and as some of you (who are as old as I) will know that YEARS ago his favorite color was PURPLE!!! (Which happens to be my fave color!)
Anyhow, tomorrow- Dec 9th, I will be making purple items for charity, just for fun!
I got some Red Heart 'purples' varigated yarn today at the hardware store and tomorrow they are going to become KIDS MITTENS for the baby project - which as you know is not just for babies anymore, it is now for hundreds of refugees in .
If you would like to join me in having a PURPLE DAY to honor Donny Osmond's birthday - yell out "Someone help me, help me, help me, pleeee- e-e- eese!!" And lets see what we can make!!
This pattern was given to me last week by a lady in our Stake of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Please do not place them on your site, do NOT sell them or items made from them! I have made a few adjustments to the pattern to make it easier to understand. If you make these please consider either sending them to UMC in Vegas, or to a hospital of your choice who need tiny items.

CROCHETED PREEMIE HAT
(adjustments made by Beverly A. Qualheim 2006)
All rows are worked in back loop only (BLO) of each stitch to create ribbing for stretch.
Using size F hook and baby yarn (Size G hook for newborn size)
Row 1: sc in 2nd chain from hook, sc in each st across. Ch 1, turn (34 sc)
Row 2: sc in BLO of first 27 sc except leave the last 7 sts unworked. Ch 1, turn
Row 3: sc in BLO of each st across. Ch 1, turn (27 sc)
Row 4: sc in BLO back including the last 7 unworked sts you skipped in row 2. Ch 1, turn (34 sc)
Repeat these 4 rows 14 times till you have 56 rows (28 ridges)
Cut yarn leaving a 36" tail. Using a large eyed sewing needle, thread yarn and stitch the side seam shut by holding row 1 and row 56 together matching sts. Weave the needle in and out of the top sts of the hat, and pull tightly to gather the top. Back stitch 4 sts and cut yarn.
Size F hook and baby yarn for preemie size (size G hook for newborn size)
LEG: Ch 15 (all rows are worked in BLO)
Row 1: Sc in 2nd chain from hook, sc in each st across. Ch 1, turn (14 sc)
Row 2 - 20:Sc in each st across. Ch 1, turn (14 sts). At the end on row 20, do not fasten off.
INSTEP: With 2 yards of new yarn, join in end of 8th row of leg. (I count in past 4 ridges to the 5th ridge)
Row 1: Ch 1, sc in same st as joining sc and in end st of next 4 rows. Ch 1, turn (5 sts).
Rows 2-7: Sc in each st across. Ch 1, turn (5 sts). Fasten off.
(You now have an upside down looking 'T' with a fat top to the T and a short thin stem)
FOOT: Pick up working yarn on the leg. (You will be working across, up, over, back down, and across the stem of the upside down T shape.)
Sc in the end sts across next 8 rows of leg.
Sc in end of next 7 sts of the instep.
Sc in BLO of next 5 sc.
Sc in end st of next 8 rows of leg.
Rows 2-7: Sc in each st across. Ch 1, turn (35 sts)
Row 8: Sk first st, sc in next 14 sts (skip 1 st, sc in next) 3 times total, sc in next 12 sts, sk 1 st, sl st in last st. Ch 1, turn (29 sts)
Row 9: Sk first st, sc in next 11 sts, (sk 1 st, sc in next st) 3 times, sc in next 10 sts, sk 1 st, sl st in last st. Ch 1, turn (24 sts)
Row 10: Sk first st, sc in next 12 sts. With right sides facing, sl st corresponding sts of bottom edges together.
Whip stitch remaining portion of the foot and leg (or slip stitch shut). Fasten off, Eave in the ends
BLO = Back loop only, sk = skip, sc = single crochet, ch = chain, st = stitch, sl = slip.
HUG THE ONES YOU LOVE! I am off to work on a scarf, so I can start those purple mittens tomorrow!
